Dado’s Ties…they never go out of style

Dado's ties are always in style...

Dado’s ties are always in style…

Today, Dado (my dad and the boys’ grandfather) opened the Belk’s ad to find that some of the ties in the photo were somewhat familiar…

He went to his tie rack (a Barbershop singer never throws anything away that MIGHT be useful in a show) and found that he did, indeed, have similar ties. In fact, they were darned near identical! He did what any socially savvy guy would do-posted it to Facebook.

So, much to my mother’s dismay (that would be the boys’ Ditdo), Dado gets to keep his ties in case he needs to quickly don one for a wedding or the governor’s mansion for dinner…or to the Waffle House with the grandsons.

Father’s Day…Barbershop Style

For as long as I can remember, songs in four-part harmony have been a part of the audio background of my life. Specifically, the bass parts which always seem to surround my dad with a hum or a tag. I grew up thinking that such songs as “Little Girl”, “My Wild Irish Rose”, and “Lida Rose” were normal lullabies. My two boys have grown up with the same songbook-with some good old school rock-n-roll mixed in. At a recent performance, the MC asked the audience to raise a hand if they had seen more than 10 years of Barbershop Shows in their lifetime. While there were the expected hands from the folks with “snowy hair”, none of the hands was raised more enthusiastically than by my oldest son who proudly said out loud, “I have seen 14!”

Dado, Uncle Steve & Drew-3 Generations of Barbershop Style

One of my fondest memories included an Alaskan Cruise on which our Stone Mountain Barbershop Chorus had been invited to sing. Again, my oldest (then 7) practiced and practiced the chorus’ signature song, “Down By The Riverside” along with his Uncle Steve which then resulted in three generations of “Volpert Men” singing on the same stage. I still think both my boys expect to meet their own “little bright-eyed gal” down by the riverside one day.

My dad’s names are varied. Those close to him call him “Butch”. He is “Earl”  or “Big E” to many. I always called him Dad, but the one that fits him best was given to him by the firstborn, as often happens…Dado. Not only do his own three grandsons call him “Dado”, but most of the neighborhood kids, swim team, hockey, soccer, band, school and church kids call him “Dado” too.

I will always be “Daddy’s Little Girl”, in the best of Barbershop Style. That song will unfairly bring many tears to your eyes. He always hums a little tune under his breath and has a song for just about every occasion. Dado always asks if he can call you sweetheart and tells me that we are the hearts of his heart…Listen for yourself…Let Me Call You Sweetheart…and Happy Father’s Day!

Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory…

Earl Volpert sings with his Stone Mountain Barbershop Chorus for the first time since triple bypass a short 5 weeks ago. (Top far left)

We call my dad by many names. For the grandsons, most of the neighborhood kids, and the hockey and soccer teams, he is affectionately known as Dado. The chorus he sings with just call him Earl or the Big E. Much of the family has known him as Butch.  For my mom and the family who have watched him struggle for several months with what turned out to be three blocked arteries, he is known as Chief Mended Heart.Whatever name he might be known or by whom, he is a man with a big heart and a booming bass that was gloriously and most clearly heard during his first public performance since his triple bypass just five short weeks ago. The folks at Gwinnett Medical could be proud of their “poster child” for bypass. But is was the eclectic crowd who gathered to listen to the voice they have come to cherish who made it most remarkable. For the ones who call him Dado, there were both the seasoned listeners and the kids who were new to this genre of music. Reports were that it was great to hear Dado sing and that even though they were “just kids” it was kinda “cool”. There was family and there were friends who came to listen and to cheer and clap for The Big E. But whatever the audience called him, they all sat silently to listen to his voice as it brought out the deep and abiding reverence that is due when singing the words Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory Of The Coming Of The Lord…for Dad…he has seen that Glory just a little too recently and the words seemed to have more meaning this rendition. Whatever the reason, his voice rang strongly on the stage and captivated his personal audience who all felt grateful to have the chance to hear the voice they have long cherished proclaiming the glory of the day.
